Ever wonder if massage helps with pregnancy? Or wonder what the benefits may be? Or even, how will a massage therapist be able to treat me effectively with my growing baby?
Let’s try and answer some of those questions…
As a registered massage therapist here at ALPHA Health Services, some of the most common complaints I see are: low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, heavy legs and feet, plus tension around the neck and shoulders.
According to a study done in the Journal of Nursing and Health Science ‘the most common pregnancy discomforts in the second trimester of pregnancy were headache, backache, sleep disturbance, muscle cramp, anxiety, and joint pain.’
How does massage help and what are the benefits?
The journal further states that, ‘the evidence strongly suggests there are maternal health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.’
‘…massage therapy can be incorporated into routine prenatal care as an emotional and physical health supplement shown to improve pregnancy outcome and maternal health,’ and that ‘women reported that therapeutic massage was very effective on relieving pregnancy discomforts…
In conclusion, ‘therapeutic massage was effective method for reducing discomforts related pain and can be clinically recommended as an alternative, safe and affordable method of pain relief during pregnancy.’
How will the massage therapist treat me and my growing baby? I can’t lay on my stomach…
I’m very excited to be able to introduce the pregnancy bolster here at ALPHA! In my RMT practice, I’ve previously had people positioned in side-laying, since most are uncomfortable on their backs and laying on their stomachs is just not possible for obvious reasons. So, one of the great things with the pregnancy bolster is that it allows mom to lay on their stomach. What?! How is that possible, you may ask? The pregnancy bolster has a cut out, so it’s able to accommodate the growing baby throughout the pregnancy. Which is also great news for any stomach sleepers out there…
Details on the pregnancy bolster:
Allows for pregnant person to comfortably lay on their stomachs for the duration of the massage.
- RMT is able to treat low back and head, neck, shoulders; common areas of tension experienced during pregnancy.
- Cut out is large enough to accommodate any stage of pregnancy.
- Cut out doesn’t interfere with babies’ comfort. Bolster is able to offer support with growing baby.
- Pregnancy pillow allows for treatment both during pregnancy and post-partum.
- Constructed out of CFC-free urethane foam and Natursoft Upholstery.
