Osteoarthritis and the GLA:D Program

What is Osteoarthritis and how can the GLA:D Program help?

What is Osteoarthritis?

Arthritis (arthro = joint; itis = inflammation) is a general medical term used to describe inflammation within a joint.

This inflammation can cause redness, swelling, and stiffness; overtime this can lead to a decrease in overall function. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis which affects not only the cartilage but the entire joint, most commonly in the hip and the knee. This loss of function from arthritis can affect your ability to enjoy your valued daily activities as a result of pain or limitations such as weakness. Unfortunately, there is no cure for osteoarthritis; however, there are things you can do to manage your symptoms, improve your function, and prevent disability!

So, what is the GLA:D program and what does it have to do with Osteoarthritis?

GLA:D – Good Life with Arthritis in Denmark.

This is an education and exercise based neuromotor training program that was developed in Denmark specifically for individuals who have hip and knee osteoarthritis. It is an 8-week program lead by a certified practitioner that takes you through 12 guided exercise training sessions along with 2-3 education sessions to ensure that you have all of the tools you need to manage your condition.

How will exercise help with the osteoarthritis?

These sessions will focus on teaching movement patterns geared towards improving muscle strength, stabilizing the joint, improving your range of motion, improving cardiorespiratory fitness, and ultimately reducing your symptoms! The GLA:D program is founded on the most up to date and evidence-based research which is why it is the most effective non-surgical treatment for knee and hip Osteoarthritis.

My joint replacement surgery is already booked; how can GLA:D help me?

The GLA:D program is great even if you have already spoke to your doctor and have surgery coming up! All of those wonderful muscle patterning exercises that are offered through the GLA:D program will work towards making you stronger. If you are stronger before surgery, then you can expect better outcomes and a faster recovery following your joint replacement.

Overall, the GLA:D program is a fantastic resource for individuals who are experiencing any level of osteoarthritis. Whether your osteoarthritis is mild, moderate, severe, or you are awaiting your surgery date the GLA:D program can get you back to doing the things you love!
